ROYCE gets the SUNTIMES LOVE

This week from CenterstageChicago.com »
On the hot seat We give you our list of the top shows in town this week, including hip hop innovators Royce at darkroom on Tuesday.

The Hot Seat

Royce
8 p.m. Tuesday at darkroom; $8
Most hip-hop bands follow the standard, percussion-heavy boom-bap style, popularized by The Roots over a decade ago. Thankfully, this sextet breaks away from the norm with synth-heavy rhythms and sweeping vocals. Stylistically, it's tempting to compare Royce to the Gorillaz—but the group's latest album, Subtleties of the Game (featuring rapper Qwel), helped it to establish a sound all its own.
